 Tadao Ando and his world

Tadao Ando

安藤 忠雄

Born in Osaka in 1941, a Japanese self-taught architect who spent his early years as a professional boxer and truck driver, until he changed course, taught himself architecture and eventually became one of the Great Fathers of contemporary architecture. He does not even have an architecture degree. But who really cares? He said:

“It wasn’t that I had any great dream of being an architect. I just wanted to make things. Whether it was furniture, painting, interior design, or architecture. I just wanted to create something.” – Tadao Ando

Ando’s architectural style is said to create a “haiku”* effect, emphasising nothingness and empty space to represent the beauty of simplicity. His work is known for the creative use of natural light and for structures that follow natural forms of the landscape, rather than disturbing the landscape by making it conform to the constructed space of a building. His buildings are often characterised by complex three-dimensional circulation paths.

Westin Resort, Awaji Yumebutai and garden complex

He designed Awaji Yumebutai and the garden complex which is the one-of-a-kind “environment creation” project equipped with facilities that blend in with the magnificent landscape that takes advantage of a dynamic slope. When visiting it for the fist time I was overcome with feelings of melancholy and nostalgia, as the architectural designs of the buildings took me back for a moment to my childhood days in socialist Poland. His architecture has moved my heart since the very first time I’ve seen it…

“I want to create a space that moves people. It doesn’t matter if it is a house, or a museum, or whatever. So, it is somebody sitting on that lawn, just going around and around and feeling really happy. That is something that I’m striving for.” – Tadao Ando

Justina Ko’s posts whet my appetite for Japan more that a “smashed avo” for lunch , or a Daniel Riccardio “shoey” full of Dom Perignon.
